Common Terms for the Cannabis Curious

It’s easy to be overwhelmed with the many options and terminology when you’re new to the cannabis world. A few decades ago, weed was weed, and you smoked it in joints or bongs. Whereas these days, there are options such as dried flower, edibles, concentrates, and even beverages to choose from. Plus, once you settle on the product, you still have to decide between CBD or THC, indica or sativa. It’s hard to know what or how to choose.

So, if you’re curious about trying marijuana, let us here at Greeley Gallery set your mind at ease. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are always happy to answer any questions or make recommendations. But we’ll also explain what the most common terms mean right here and now so you can get a feel for the cannabis products right for you. The main thing to keep in mind is knowing what sort of experience you want, then finding the option that fits it best.

Cannabinoids

Let’s begin with cannabinoids first, which may look or sound complicated, but cannabinoids are just the active chemical compounds within a marijuana plant. There are hundreds of them, but the two most common types are THC and CBD.

CBD

Cannabidiol (CBD) is attributed to the medicinal effects of cannabis, and for good reason. CBD is touted to help anxiety, insomnia (both in falling and staying asleep), and chronic pain. According to Harvard University, its most prevalent and well-researched achievement is its effectiveness in reducing and sometimes stopping epileptic seizures in children.

CBD is a fantastic way to receive all the health benefits cannabis offers without the psychoactive high associated with weed. So, if you are interested more in the medicinal side of cannabis rather than the recreational side, then choosing products with a higher CBD ratio would be ideal. Good thing Greeley Gallery is both a recreational and medicinal cannabis dispensary, and a wide variety of CBD options.

THC

If your goal is to experience the high weed is known for, then it’s Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) you want. THC is the cannabinoid compound responsible for the psychoactive experience because it affects the cerebral cortex of our brain – the area responsible for thinking, memory, motor movements, pleasure, coordination, and concentration. In fact, research shows that both CBD and THC act as neuroprotectors, meaning they protect the cells in our brains.

With THC you can expect to feel relaxed, in a good mood, calm, or even euphoric. However, if the THC high comes on a bit strong, it might result in dizziness, depression, anxiety, or fatigue. If you don’t have much experience, it’s always a good idea to start with a smaller percentage of THC at lower doses and work your way up. Any of our staff will be happy to help you find a strain to fit your tolerance.

Indica

Now then, THC can be further divided into either indica, sativa, or hybrid strains. If you want relief from anxiety, chronic pain, or insomnia but also want to feel high, then we recommend indica. Indica is a type of cannabis plant that provides a body high while helping combat your physical stress. Be warned, though, after smoking indica, you might not want to get off your couch, which is why its nickname is “in-da-couch.”

Sativa

On the other hand, if you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps or need a creative kick, you’ll want to check out sativa dominate strains. Some consider sativa the opposite of indica because while indica affects your body, sativa is known for its mind high. Sativa strains also help ease symptoms of depression because they can boost energy and focus, putting you in a better mood. We’d recommend choosing uplifting sativa options such as Double Dream for doing creative tasks like art, writing, or even just going for a walk.

Hybrids

As we’re sure you can guess by now, hybrid strains are a mixture of indica and sativa. Hybrids are fantastic when you want the best of both highs – body, and mind. Immerse yourself in a cloud of bliss and feel your body float away while your anxious dark clouds dissipate. They’re fantastic for vegging out and binging a show, watching your favorite movie, or even playing your favorite video games.

Just be warned, you may want to indulge in hybrids only when you have nothing else going on. Because whatever you choose to do, you’ll likely become engrossed in it, and no doubt will end with a nap.

Final Thoughts

Marijuana held a reputation for a long time as something lazy couch potatoes took part in. But slowly, this image is changing. Couch potatoes aren’t the only people who enjoy cannabis. There are options for everyone. If you’re curious about cannabis, we encourage you to give it a shot and to go at your own pace.
