How to Know Which Cannabis Strain to Choose

There are many things to love about cannabis, but its versatility is high on our list here at Greeley Gallery. Cannabis products range from edibles and beverages to smoking dried flower or concentrates, with plenty of options in between, making it easy to customize your experience – and we have all of the above and more at Greeley Gallery’s north Portland dispensary.

Then, of course, there are many strains to pick from whether medicinal or recreational. However, we understand that all this variety can also be overwhelming, especially when you’re new to the cannabis world. This is why we decided to write this article which will answer some of your questions about cannabis strains and how to choose the right ones for you.

What are Cannabis Strains?

Before we choose a strain, it is worth discussing what we’re talking about when we say cannabis strain. To do that, we need to review a bit of cannabis history.

See, the cannabis plant originated in central Asia, but over thousands of years, the plant migrated around the world. Along its journey, people discovered, planted, and cultivated the cannabis plant so over time, cannabis adapted to thrive in expansive and diverse environments. In order to survive in such a wide range of habitats, the plant changed and evolved its physical characteristics and chemical compositions. Eventually, these cannabis plants were referred to as landrace strains.

Being the curious creatures we are, people began experimenting with the landrace cannabis strains by crossbreeding various combinations of female and male plants to create new strains. This process is still used today and produces an ever-growing list of fresh and unique cannabis strains.

Indica, Sativas, and Hybrids

You’re probably already well aware of the terms indicas, sativa, and hybrids, but odds are, what you’ve heard about what they mean isn’t quite right. A common misconception is that indicas are best for relaxing or sleeping, whereas sativas are stimulating and more uplifting, while hybrids are a mixture of both.

But the truth is, these terms, indica, sativa, and hybrids, don’t actually describe the particular effects of cannabis. They actually refer to the structure and characteristics of the plant, which is great info for growers but less relevant for you. Instead, we recommend considering different criteria when choosing your next cannabis strain.

Cannabis Criteria to Pay Attention To

When choosing a weed strain, the two most important things to look at are a strain’s potency and knowing your desired effects.

Some cannabis strains are more potent than others, especially concerning THC content, which is responsible for the high cannabis is known for. If you’re looking for an intense high, you’ll want a cannabis strain with a higher THC content. Whereas if you’re new to cannabis and still figuring out your tolerance, we’d recommend a strain with a lower percentage and slowly build your way up.

We told you earlier that indica, sativa, and hybrid don’t actually describe your experience, which is why at Greeley Gallery, we include a description of the experience each strain produces on its label. This way, you’ll know which strains have more uplifting effects, which ones are more mellow, or even euphoric. And, of course, our friendly and knowledgeable staff is always available to make a recommendation.

Final Thoughts

Many cannabis dispensaries will have different pricing for different strains, but we choose to be different at Greeley Gallery. All of our cannabis strains are high quality and locally grown, so our prices are based on quantity.

Our medicinal and recreational cannabis dispensary is located in north Portland, near the University of Portland and around the corner from Arbor Lodge Park. We’re open seven days a week between 7am and 10pm, we look forward to seeing you soon!
