Cannabis tinctures are one of the most versatile cannabis products available today. At Greeley Gallery, our Portland dispensary helps customers discover cannabis tinctures that provide precise dosing, long-lasting effects, and a discreet way to enjoy cannabis.
In the millennium since, our love of cannabis has only grown. Smoking the herb remains the favorite consumption method. However, it seems fewer people are aware of how fantastic cannabis tinctures are. Greeley Gallery wants to change that because, as a medicinal and recreational cannabis dispensary, we think tinctures are one of the best cannabis products out there.
What Are Cannabis Tinctures?
In the most basic sense, a tincture is a type of cannabis extract, meaning a solvent or oil is infused with cannabis. However, while you can smoke some cannabis extracts via vaporization, tinctures are consumed orally.
Tinctures are created by marinating cannabis in a base liquid – such as food-grade alcohol, glycerin, or a carrier oil like coconut oil – for a few days. This process extracts all the cannabinoids, yummy terpenes, and other compounds from the plant matter, infusing it into the solvent. Next, the resulting concoction is strained to remove the plant matter. The remaining base liquid is then ready to be bottled and consumed.
Typically, cannabis tinctures come in 1 fl oz (30 ML) glass bottles that have droppers attached to the inside of the lid to provide easy consumption. The dropper delivery method also allows for precise dosage measurement, the most accurate of all cannabis products, to guarantee consistent doses.
Since tinctures are not considered a food product, they can sometimes exceed the 100 mg THC limit most edibles have, meaning cannabis tinctures can be more potent than other cannabis products. For instance, the THC in Bubbles Cannabis Syrup ranges from 250mg to 350mg, whereas some of Farmer’s Friend tinctures contain as much as 1,065 mg.
However, not all cannabis tinctures are that potent. Like other cannabis products, tinctures have a broad range of choices that provide a customized cannabis experience with all of the benefits.
Benefits of Cannabis Tinctures
While smoking cannabis is often viewed as edgy, and edibles are delicious, tinctures may at first seem less exciting. But there are reasons cannabis tinctures have endured in dispensaries and apothecaries for at least a thousand years.
Why Cannabis Tinctures Are a Healthier Option
For one thing, cannabis tinctures are the healthiest way to consume cannabis. Since we consume tinctures via our mouths, they bypass any harmful effects smoking cannabis can have on our lungs, such as inhaling particulates or irritating the bronchial tree.
Furthermore, while tinctures are consumed orally, they don’t have any of the sugar, gluten, food coloring, gelatin, or other ingredients found in edibles. This means cannabis tinctures are ideal for those with food intolerances and allergies.
Full-Spectrum Cannabis Tinctures
Similar to other cannabis extracts and concentrates, the process of infusing the cannabis plant in a solvent provides consumers with the full spectrum of benefits the plant has to offer, beyond THC and CBD.
That said, tinctures come in a variety of options, including indica, sativa, CBD-only, THC-only, and hybrid options. Click here to see a full list of cannabis tinctures our Portland weed shop offers.
Discreet and Convenient
Cannabis tinctures are one of the most discreet products for consuming cannabis. Similar to edibles, tinctures don’t produce any vapor or smoke the way inhalation methods do. When the bottles are sealed, they don’t emit any odor. But while edible packaging can be mistaken for regular, non-cannabis treats, the small tincture bottles resemble supplements or skincare products.
Long Shelf Life and Freshness
An understated benefit of cannabis tinctures is that they have a longer shelf life than most other cannabis products. While marijuana flower and edibles can last from about six months to a year or two, cannabis tinctures have a shelf life of between one and three years.
The longevity of cannabis tinctures is thanks to two things. One is the very nature of tinctures, in which the base oil, but especially the base alcohol, not only infuses the cannabis plant’s cannabinoids and other properties but preserves them. The other major reason tinctures have such a long shelf life is the airtight glass bottles they’re packaged in, which are typically dark in color and help shield the product from sun exposure that degrades it.
Precise Dosing Every Time
The typical 1 mL oz tincture bottle comes with a dropper that holds 1 mL, which allows precise measurements of every drop you consume. And don’t let their small bottles fool you.
In addition to a longer shelf life, cannabis tinctures often last a lot longer than an edible or flower. Remember that tinctures aren’t beholden to the 100 mg cap that other cannabis products have, which means a very small amount goes a very long way.
How to Choose the Right Cannabis Tinctures
Whether you’re looking for THC, CBD, or a balanced formula, choosing the right cannabis tincture depends on your goals and experience.
